Hayden Road Now Sorts McCormick Ranch Dinners by Occasion

"It's also all these things that I either wanted to cook for myself or I wanted to eat in my neighborhood," chef Matt Carter told Phoenix New Times in September. He was describing Dash, the all-day spot he's opening near Hayden and Mountain View roads. Carter has lived in McCormick Ranch for 17 years and spent about a decade thinking about opening a casual restaurant there, according to What Now Phoenix.

His timing lands in the middle of a reshuffle. Between September 18 and September 28, 2026, the south end of Hayden Road gained a large chef-driven dinner room and lost a public wine bar, which now opens only for booked events. Dash is set to fill the third role, a place to stop in on an ordinary weekday. The Hayden corridor now has three rooms with three different jobs. So the useful question on Hayden Road is less about which cuisine you want and more about what kind of evening you're planning.

The Z'Tejas Building Became the Big Room

Z'Tejas closed all of its Arizona and Texas locations as of June 30, 2025, Arizona's Family reported. That left its lakeside building at Hayden and Via de Ventura empty. Vecina opened there on Friday, September 18, 2026, at 8300 N. Hayden Road, Suite D-101. It's the second location for James and Raenee Fox, who run the original in Arcadia.

Size is the reason it matters for the neighborhood. Phoenix New Times puts the new restaurant at nearly triple the size of the Arcadia dining room. The extra space goes to a lakeside patio, private dining and more room for large parties. Mouth by Southwest adds an enlarged kitchen built for new menu items and catering, plus a mezzanine and a mural by Tato Caraveo framing the cocktail bar. James Fox described the range of evenings the room is built for to New Times. "You can have a date night at Vecina, sit on the patio, it's very chill," he said. "Or can you have a 10- to 14-top at our community table and really go all out."

The kitchen runs on a mesquite-fired grill. Arcadia regulars will recognize dishes like the Faroe Island salmon tacos with yuzu kosho aioli, Cara Cara oranges, grapefruit and pink peppercorns. Mouth by Southwest lists the salmon tacos at $24 and the karaage appetizer at $17, with $2 off the karaage during happy hour, 4 to 6 p.m. daily. There's also a nod to the building's previous tenant. James Fox told New Times that Z'Tejas fans will find a frozen cocktail on the Scottsdale menu that references the old restaurant.

For now, Vecina is an evening room. Local coverage in late September listed hours as 4 to 9 p.m. daily. At opening, New Times reported that dinner was the only service, with lunch planned "in the coming months" and brunch part of the longer-term menu. Until lunch starts, the big room on the lake covers dinner, happy hour and group nights, not a midday sandwich.

Ten Days Later, Saint Urban Became a Room You Book

Saint Urban, chef Christopher Collins' eatery and wine bar at 8260 N. Hayden Road, is just down the block from Vecina's address. It closed to public service after about two years, Phoenix New Times reported on September 29, 2026. Its menu had centered on shareable plates such as charcuterie boards, sandwiches and salads.

The space is still in use. Saint Urban's own site says that as of September 28 it has become Saint Urban Private Dining Room, "available for holiday parties, memorable events, and life's most important moments." The site also says dates are already booking through the end of 2026 and into 2027. You can't walk in anymore, but neighbors planning a December party have a room on Hayden that does nothing except host one. Booking runs through an inquiry link on that site.

Saint Urban was the casual wine-and-boards option a few doors from where Vecina now sits. Vecina's large dinner room is now the public dinner option on that block, and Saint Urban's room serves only booked events. Along that stretch of Hayden, both nights out and private events have an obvious place to go. Nothing is filling the slot for a quick weekday coffee or a carryout dinner.

Dash Is Built for the Gap Left Behind

Dash is the answer to that gap, and it's built for it. AZ Big Media places it at the southeast corner of Hayden Road and Mountain View, in a neighborhood shopping center. The address is 9619 N. Hayden Road, Suite 101. Carter and partner Brian Raab are developing it through Broken Plate Hospitality, the group behind Zinc Bistro, The Mission and Fat Ox. It's their first new concept in a decade. Longtime Fat Ox pastry chef Lisa Graf is working on the menu with Carter.

Here's how the three rooms compare, as of mid-October 2026.

Vecina Saint Urban Private Dining Room Dash
Address 8300 N. Hayden Rd, Suite D-101 8260 N. Hayden Rd 9619 N. Hayden Rd, Suite 101
Status Open since Sept. 18, 2026 Private events only since Sept. 28, 2026 Listed as "Coming Fall 2026"
How you get in Dinner service, 4 to 9 p.m. daily Booked event inquiry Counter, patio and curbside pickup planned
Built for Date nights, groups, lakeside patio Holiday parties and milestone events Coffee, pastries, lunch, take-home dinners

What sets Dash apart is the seat count. What Now Phoenix reports a dining room of 12 seats, a west-facing patio with 40 more, and a dedicated curbside pickup area for online orders. Twelve indoor seats can't support a big dinner service. That size fits a coffee stop, a patio lunch or picking up dinner on the way home.

The menu follows the same plan. Dash will start with coffee, fresh pastries, salads and sandwiches. Roman-style pizza, charcoal chicken, soft-serve ice cream and daily specials come later, once evening service begins. The market side will sell take-home versions of food Carter created for his other restaurants, including mac and cheese, chips and guacamole, and handmade pasta.

On timing, New Times forecast a November opening in its September 24 story. AZ Big Media's October 13 piece still said "this fall," and the Dash website still reads "Coming Fall 2026." Broken Plate hasn't released full menus or hours yet. The group's Instagram account for Dash is where it says it will post menu previews and the opening date.

The Season Around the Three Rooms

These restaurant changes line up with the two big evening events at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, which run on many of the same nights as Vecina's dinner service through December.

  • Spook-Track-Ula runs nightly through October 31, 6 to 9:30 p.m. This year adds a haunted train-car walk-through and a River Rambler storybook train ride for younger kids.
  • Holiday Lights 2026 runs November 27 through December 30, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., with no event on December 24 or 25.
  • Holiday Lights tickets go on sale October 27 at 8 a.m. through ActiveNet. Admission is $15 for ages 3 and older and free for children 2 and younger, with train and carousel rides included. Wristbands are required for entry and all rides.

One caution on the Railroad Park's Holiday Lights page. Its heading says 2026, but the event-details block underneath still reads "November 27 – December 30, 2025." The nightly hours and pricing match in both places. Before buying tickets for a specific evening, check the dates on the ActiveNet listing.

The timing works out neatly. Vecina's dinner hours start at 4 p.m., ahead of the Holiday Lights gates opening at 5:30. If Dash opens in November as New Times forecast, its pastries and take-home pasta would arrive in the same weeks people are booking Saint Urban's room for December parties.
